Anomalus nasi is a rare little ‘extra’ nose muscle that may affect how someone’s nose wrinkles when they scrunch or flare it. In one reported case it was only about 11.9 mm long and 2.8 mm wide.
Function
May assist with subtle nasal movement, especially slight elevation or shortening of the nose, and contribute to lateral nasal-wall wrinkles; possibly a small role in forceful nasal inspiration. Its function is likely minor because it is usually thin and variable.
Origin
Frontal process of the maxilla, on the lateral side of the nose.
Insertion
Variable; described as inserting into or blending with the nasal bone, upper lateral cartilage, procerus, and the transverse part of nasalis. In one case it ascended superomedially and blended with the superficial layer of procerus.
Innervation
Facial nerve (CN VII); exact branch not consistently documented, most likely nearby zygomatic and/or buccal branches.
