Ceratoglossus

Tongue & Throat
The ceratoglossus is named for its attachment to the “cerato-” (horn-shaped) part of the hyoid bone. It helps pull the tongue downward and backward, useful for swallowing and moving food through the mouth.
Function
Depresses and retracts the tongue. Helps pull the sides of the tongue downward and assists with tongue positioning during swallowing, chewing, and speech.
Origin
Greater horn (greater cornu) of the hyoid bone.
Insertion
Lateral side of the tongue, blending with other tongue muscle fibers.
Innervation
Hypoglossal nerve (CN XII).
