Intertransversarii Laterales Lumborum

These tiny muscles act more like segmental stabilizers and position sensors than powerful movers. They help the nervous system monitor subtle changes between neighbouring lumbar vertebrae.
Function
Assists ipsilateral lateral flexion of the lumbar spine, stabilizes adjacent lumbar vertebrae, and contributes to proprioception and fine control of spinal movement.
Origin
Inferior borders of the transverse processes of L1–L4; posterior portions may also arise from the accessory processes of the lumbar vertebrae.
Insertion
Superior borders of the transverse processes of the vertebra immediately below, typically L2–L5.
Innervation
Anterior (ventral) rami of the lumbar spinal nerves.
