These muscles are extremely small and probably contribute more to proprioception and fine segmental control than to producing large spinal movements. Their position close to individual lumbar vertebrae makes them well suited to detecting subtle changes in spinal position.
Function
Assists with ipsilateral lateral flexion of the lumbar spine, helps stabilize adjacent lumbar vertebrae, and contributes to proprioception and fine control of lumbar movement.
Origin
Accessory processes of L1–L4 vertebrae. Some detailed descriptions also include fibers from the adjacent mammillary process and the mamillo-accessory ligament.
Insertion
Mammillary processes of the immediately succeeding vertebrae, L2–L5.
Innervation
Posterior (dorsal) rami of adjacent lumbar spinal nerves. This posterior-ramus supply distinguishes the medial intertransversarii from the lateral lumbar intertransversarii, which are primarily supplied by anterior rami.
