These tiny muscles act more like precision stabilizers than powerful movers. By connecting neighbouring cervical vertebrae, they make extremely small adjustments that keep the neck steady and feed back awareness of head and neck position.
Function
Assists with ipsilateral lateral flexion of the cervical spine and stabilizes adjacent cervical vertebrae during neck movement.
Origin
Transverse processes of the cervical vertebrae.
Insertion
Transverse process of the adjacent vertebra above; the posterior cervical intertransversarii occupy the posterior portion of the cervical transverse-process region.
Innervation
Posterior and anterior rami of cervical spinal nerves. The more medial/proper posterior slips are primarily associated with posterior rami, while the lateral posterior slips can receive anterior ramus innervation.
