Multifidus cervicis acts more like a precision stabilizer than a large movement-producing muscle. Its short overlapping fibers help control individual cervical vertebrae while you turn, tilt, or extend your neck.
Function
Stabilizes the cervical vertebrae; bilaterally assists cervical extension; unilaterally assists ipsilateral lateral flexion and contralateral rotation of the cervical spine.
Origin
Superior articular processes of the lower cervical vertebrae, primarily C4–C7.
Insertion
Spinous processes of cervical vertebrae approximately 2–5 levels superior to the vertebra of origin, primarily C2–C5.
Innervation
Medial branches of the posterior (dorsal) rami of cervical spinal nerves.
