The multifidus thoracis is made of short, overlapping muscle bundles that span only a few vertebrae at a time, giving it precise control over individual segments of the thoracic spine.
Function
Stabilizes the thoracic vertebral column. Bilateral contraction assists with extension of the thoracic spine, while unilateral contraction produces contralateral rotation and assists with ipsilateral lateral flexion.
Origin
Transverse processes of the thoracic vertebrae.
Insertion
Spinous processes of vertebrae approximately 2–4 levels superior to the vertebra of origin.
Innervation
Posterior (dorsal) rami of thoracic spinal nerves.
