Rectococcygeus

The rectococcygeus is not a ‘flex it on command’ muscle. It is smooth muscle, meaning it works automatically in the background to help support the rectum and anal canal.
Function
Helps suspend, support, and stabilize the anorectal junction; may assist defecation by helping lift/shorten the rectal region and influence the anorectal bend.
Origin
Anterior surface of the 2nd and 3rd coccygeal vertebrae.
Insertion
Blends with the longitudinal smooth muscle fibers on the posterior wall of the anal canal/rectum.
Innervation
Autonomic innervation via the inferior hypogastric/pelvic plexus; not voluntary skeletal motor innervation.
