Rotatores Breves

Rotatores breves are tiny “spinal steering” muscles. They are not powerful movers, but they help the spine sense its own position and make small stabilizing adjustments.
Function
Assist with contralateral rotation of the vertebral column, especially in the thoracic spine. They also stabilize individual vertebral segments and contribute to proprioception.
Origin
Transverse processes of vertebrae, most developed in the thoracic region.
Insertion
Lamina of the vertebra one level above the origin.
Innervation
Posterior (dorsal) rami of spinal nerves.
