Spinalis Capitis

Spinalis capitis is one of those “maybe muscles.” In many people it is poorly developed, blended with semispinalis capitis, or not clearly separate at all — some sources describe it as inconsistent or even absent.
Function
Bilaterally helps extend the head and neck. Unilaterally assists with same-side lateral flexion of the head and cervical spine. Also helps with postural stabilization of the head and neck.
Origin
Spinous processes of C7–T1 (sometimes described more broadly as C6/C7–T1/T2); may blend with nearby nuchal ligament or semispinalis capitis fibers.
Insertion
Occipital bone between the superior and inferior nuchal lines.
Innervation
Lateral branches of the dorsal rami of cervical spinal nerves (commonly upper cervical levels, C1–C3).
