Spinalis Cervicis

The spinalis cervicis is like a small “posture cable” for the neck. It sits very close to the midline of the spine and helps keep the cervical spine upright, especially when looking down at a phone, studying, driving, or holding the head still for a long time.
Function
Extends the cervical spine when both sides contract together. Assists with slight same-side lateral flexion of the neck when one side contracts. Also helps stabilize the cervical spine and maintain upright neck posture.
Origin
Lower ligamentum nuchae and spinous processes of C7 to T2.
Insertion
Spinous process of C2 (the axis); sometimes also C3 or C4.
Innervation
Posterior (dorsal) rami of cervical spinal nerves.
