The iliocapsularis hides deep beneath the rectus femoris at the front of the hip. It has drawn attention because it may enlarge in people with hip dysplasia, apparently compensating for reduced bony stability of the joint.
Function
Tightens and stabilizes the anterior hip joint capsule, helping hold the femoral head within the acetabulum. It may also retract the capsule during hip movement to reduce the chance of capsular impingement, and likely makes a small contribution to hip flexion.
Origin
Inferior border/facet of the anterior inferior iliac spine (AIIS) and the adjacent anteromedial hip joint capsule.
Insertion
Anterior surface of the proximal femur, approximately 15–20 mm distal to the lesser trochanter.
Innervation
Small muscular branch of the femoral nerve, primarily associated with the L2–L4 spinal nerve roots.
