This is the ‘pinky-toe stabilizer’ of the foot. Even though the 5th toe looks small, this muscle helps control the outside edge of the foot when you walk, balance, or push off.
Function
Abducts the 5th toe away from the midline of the foot; assists flexion of the 5th toe at the metatarsophalangeal joint and helps support the lateral longitudinal arch.
Origin
Medial and lateral processes of the calcaneal tuberosity, the plantar aponeurosis, and intermuscular septa.
Insertion
Lateral side of the base of the proximal phalanx of the 5th toe.
Innervation
Lateral plantar nerve, mainly S2–S3.
