Flexor Hallucis Brevis
Foot
The flexor hallucis brevis is one of the big toe’s main “push-off” muscles. Every time you walk, run, jump, or rise onto your toes, it helps the big toe stay strong and stable against the ground.
Function
Flexes the great toe at the metatarsophalangeal joint. Helps stabilize the big toe during standing, walking, running, and push-off. Also assists in supporting the medial longitudinal arch.
Origin
Plantar surface of the cuboid, adjacent lateral cuneiform, and often the tendon of tibialis posterior and nearby plantar ligaments.
Insertion
Medial and lateral sides of the base of the proximal phalanx of the great toe, via the medial and lateral sesamoid bones.
Innervation
Mainly the medial plantar nerve (S1–S2); the lateral head may receive a contribution from the lateral plantar nerve.
