Tensor Vastus Intermedius

The quadriceps may not always be ‘just four.’ The tensor vastus intermedius is often described as a hidden fifth quadriceps head tucked between vastus lateralis and vastus intermedius.
Function
Tenses the aponeurosis of vastus intermedius and contributes to the knee extensor mechanism. It may help stabilize or guide the patella during extension, though its exact independent function is still debated.
Origin
Anterior or anteroinferior aspect of the greater trochanter and proximal femur.
Insertion
Blends with the quadriceps tendon / vastus intermedius aponeurosis and inserts toward the upper or medial patella.
Innervation
Femoral nerve, usually via its own muscular branch, consistent with the quadriceps group.
